Our Commitment to Carbon Removal

Removing CO₂ from the atmosphere is critical to counteracting climate change. However, the technology needed to do this at scale is still in its early stages and requires significant investment to mature. That's where our contribution comes in.

What is Stripe Climate?

Stripe Climate is a coalition of forward-thinking businesses accelerating carbon removal. By aggregating funds from companies around the world, Stripe Climate increases demand for carbon removal technologies and helps them scale faster.

Stripe Climate works with Frontier, Stripe's in-house team of science and commercial experts, to identify and purchase permanent carbon removal from the most effective projects available.

How Carbon Removal Works

Not all carbon removal is created equal. Stripe Climate focuses on permanent carbon removal—technologies that capture CO₂ and store it for thousands of years or longer. Here are two of the innovative projects we help support:

Climeworks: Direct Air Capture

Climeworks uses renewable geothermal energy and waste heat to capture CO₂ directly from the air. The captured carbon is then concentrated and permanently sequestered underground in basaltic rock formations through a process developed by Carbfix.

This technology is particularly exciting because it can remove carbon from anywhere in the world—the CO₂ doesn't need to be captured at a specific source. Climeworks has committed to removing 322 tons of CO₂ on behalf of Stripe Climate businesses.

Charm Industrial: Bio-Oil Injection

Charm Industrial has pioneered a novel carbon removal pathway. They convert biomass (plant material that has already captured CO₂ from the atmosphere) into bio-oil, then inject it deep underground for permanent geologic storage.

Stripe Climate was Charm's first customer, demonstrating the power of early adoption. In 2021, Charm removed 416 tons of CO₂ on behalf of Stripe Climate businesses.

Why Early Adoption Matters

You might wonder: why invest in expensive, emerging technologies when there are cheaper ways to offset carbon?

The answer lies in the technology adoption curve. Most groundbreaking technologies are expensive at first—think solar panels, hard drives, or DNA sequencing. But with early customers willing to pay premium prices, these technologies can iterate, improve, and dramatically reduce costs over time.

Carbon removal has the potential to follow a similar trajectory. By contributing now, ConfettiSaaS and other early adopters are helping these promising technologies:
