Free link preview checker

Open Graph checker

Paste a URL to see the card X, Facebook, LinkedIn and Slack will build from it, with every og: and twitter: tag checked and the image measured.

Paste the exact page you plan to share. Redirects are followed (up to 5).

How to use the Open Graph checker

  1. 1

    Paste the page URL

    Use the exact URL you will share, such as your launch page or a blog post.
  2. 2

    Review the previews

    See the card on each platform, the image's real size and type, and every tag the page sends.
  3. 3

    Fix and re-check

    Copy the tag template, fill the gaps flagged as problems, deploy, and check again.

A minimal set of tags that works everywhere

These seven lines in the page's <head> cover X, Facebook, LinkedIn, Slack, Discord and iMessage:

<meta property="og:title" content="Acme – invoices in one click" />
<meta property="og:description" content="Send a branded invoice in under a minute." />
<meta property="og:type" content="website" />
<meta property="og:url" content="https://acme.example/" />
<meta property="og:image" content="https://acme.example/og.png" />
<meta property="og:image:alt" content="The Acme invoice editor" />
<meta name="twitter:card" content="summary_large_image" />

Use an absolute https:// image URL, a PNG, JPG or WebP file (not SVG), and keep the image public: crawlers do not send your cookies.

Questions and answers

Which tags does a link preview need?

The Open Graph protocol requires four: og:title, og:type, og:image and og:url. Add og:description for the text under the title and twitter:card so X knows which card to draw. See the full tag list with copy-ready markup.

What size should an og:image be?

1200×630 pixels works on every major platform. Facebook recommends at least 1200×630 for sharp previews and needs 600×315 for the large format; X's large card uses a 2:1 ratio and accepts images under 5 MB. Keep text away from the edges, since each platform crops a little differently.

Is this a replacement for the X Card Validator?

X no longer offers a card preview in its old validator; you see the card when you compose a post. This checker reads the same tags X reads and shows an approximate preview, so you can fix problems before you post.

I fixed my tags but the old preview still shows. Why?

Platforms cache link previews. Facebook's Sharing Debugger and LinkedIn's Post Inspector can fetch a URL again; for other platforms, waiting or sharing a URL with a harmless query string such as ?v=2 shows the new card.

Why does the checker say my page is not HTML or returns an error?

Social platforms only build cards from HTML pages that load. If a page needs a login, blocks unknown bots, or answers with a 4xx or 5xx status, crawlers see the same thing and show no card.

Privacy and data handling

The URL you enter is sent to our server, which downloads the page's <head> (at most 1 MB) and the first 64 KB of its preview image, and returns the tags to your browser. We keep the result for about two minutes to answer repeat checks, and do not store or log the URL otherwise (refused or failed checks log the host name only). The previews load the page's image directly from that site in your browser, without a referrer, so that site sees a normal image request. Analytics record that a check ran, never the URL. Before each check, Cloudflare Turnstile confirms in your browser that a person is asking, so bots cannot use the checker to fetch pages; Cloudflare processes the signals that check needs.
